  Press release from June 27
The Festival has ended – the words are as standard as performance of the jazz standards is traditional. The organizing committee made a surprise for some pianists – your reporter observed personally how an eleven year participant of the youth program of the Festival Fariz Asadov went out for a lunch with Herbie Hancock. Before the concert I saluted the leader of the Savab group Jamil Amirov who said with indescribable dignity that I was holding the hand that Herbie Hancock held in the afternoon. This is great! It is great because the organizers gave the musicians an opportunity to touch the dream – their dream...

  Press release from June 26
Today the only concert in the program of the Festival has been held at the M.Magomayev Philarmony. The only concert because Vagif Sadykhov’s concert was cancelled and the Portuguese singer Maria Joao’s concert as we informed in our previous edition had been postponed. Azerbaijani pianist Shahin Novrasli and his friends from New York appeared on the stage of the M.Magomayev Philarmony.
I want to note right off that already well-known to the Bakians from the previous Festival the bass Nathan Peck was among the three guests; percussionist Matt Zebroski and saxophonist Jeff Lederer were as well. I had a chance to talk with Nathan the day before the concert and I found out that Jeff played with musicians who were cooperating with a famous labeler Tzadik – recognized leader in vanguard - the jazz and others...

  Press release from June 25
The next day of the Festival has been very hard for the jazz admirers – today three groups have performed whom it was just necessary to listen. Small changes happened in the program first – Clement Hadjibeyli did not open the evening at the Opera Studio but Emil Ibrahim’s quartet did.
Like to the last Festival our guest from Moscow drummer Alexander Mashin performed in the group. The quartet started its program from Emil’s father’s romance, composer Ibrahim Mamedov’s “Don’t be offended”. As Emil Ibrahim confessed to your reporter before the concert, he had wanted for a long time to “lay” romance into the jazz net – and only recently he was able to do that...

As we already mentioned the Festival has passed the equator. The program of events is especially intensive on these days – we expect to have many various performers from the whole World.
Today at the Jazz Center international cast performed: vocalist Barbara Leah Meyer from Canada in accompaniment of a musical trio from Germany. Your reporter managed to talk with her before the concert. For instance, to the question regarding what the music that she performs (not only today’s performance, but in general) is based on the singer answered that she listens to various music trying to use everything that matches her...

  Press release from June 23
According to Murphy’s Law if something can fail - it will fail definitely fail. Today the Festival started with a little delay in performance of guitarist Rafig Velimetov’s group. And the reason of the delay was technical - the apparatus did not bear the tension of the last days. But all these defects were efficiently removed - and Rafig began his program with two items in a very interesting cast: two guitars and percussionist. Naturally Rafig had of one the guitars, Barat Ragimov – the second, and Sergey Krasnyansky was at percussion. There was va ery beautiful sounding, excellent mutual understanding between the partners, precise play – everything was as it was supposed to be...

  Press release from June 22
Today’s review of the Festival as it was promised in the previous review we will begin from young performers who performed at the Opera Studio on June 21 and 22. The colonel Maksim Isayev (also known as Otto Fon Shtirlis) said that the end of conversation is always memorized – and, following to his advice, we have decided to begin from the minor leaving the major for later on. Performance of some performers could be characterized as weak or irresponsible, which is even worse. The latter refers to those musicinas who already have had some experience at festivals and other professional stages as well. But let’s keep the order...

  Press release from June 21
This time we will begin from the end – or rather from the second concert of the third day of the Festival. Everything is very simple – the first of the two concerts of the famous jazz vocalist Al Jarreau took place at the Heydar Aliyev Palace just today. But his visit to Baku started from a little confuse. After an exhausting flight on Washington – Frankfurt - Baku route the officers of the VIP-service hall took Al Jarreau’s and his musicians’ passports for registration – and gave them back only two hours later! According to the words of one of the members of the organizing committee, Al Jarreau’s tour manager said that they had never met with such an attitude in any country of the world yet...

  Press release from June 20
On the second day of the festival Javan Zeynalli (piano, vocal) with Rauf Sultanov (bass) and Tofig Jabbarov (percussions) appeared first on the stage of the Baku Jazz Center. The program of performance of the ex-vocalist of the “Gaya” quartet included classical jazz, although he started with memories of Vagif Mustafazadeh. After a short theme from the “Nature of the Native Land ” play Zeynalli did a pause and announced that he dedicated his play to the great Azerbaijani jazzman. At one of the moments on the background of harmony that Rauf Sultanov was building a short mugam sounded which smoothly converted to the double-bass solo...
